Lighting, editing, scene dressing, concepts and scripts are super important when it comes to sex work, but we also have to remember to do the ‘boring’ stuff too. No, I don’t mean messaging customers on socials or private message (also that is a good thing to do, don’t stop doing that entirely). No, I mean taking the time to understand and analyze your analytics. I promise you, it isn’t that hard. And much like any other skill, it gets easier the more time you take to look at it.
But where do you start?
Sales, Sales, Sales
Commonly, creators run to look at how much they made that day. Again, not something bad to look at - AT ALL, but it doesn’t give you the full picture. Try to track these numbers ALONG with how much you make daily:
What type of sales did you make? (clips, customs, calls, private messages, ptvs, webcam, subscriptions, tips, etc.)
How much did you make in the respective categories above?
How many returning customers did you have (bought from you in the last 90 days)?
How many new customers do you have?
There are plenty more metrics we can talk about but again, beginners guide. You really want to focus on growing what you track slowly, especially if you aren’t in the habit of doing so. Trying to track 200 different types of analytics is not only taxing on a system but can be overwhelming.
So.. Why Those?
It is important to know why you are monitoring these numbers and what they mean. They are the pulse of your business and will help you see problems and/or where to pivot. Let’s break down the 'why' and also, how to get these golden nuggets of data.
You can determine your sales type pretty easily, so let’s focus strictly on the 'why you need to monitor it'. It isn’t just to know where most of your money comes from, but also if your business is running in alignment with the tasks you like the most. Establishing the type of ways you can make money will help you plan out what content to make, to keep, and to identify different ways to get that $$$.
Yes, this is different. Now you aren’t just looking for different ways to make money on the platforms you are using but looking at how much each vertical makes you. If you dislike doing webcam more than selling clips but find that money is pouring in from cam sites… it is time to reevaluate how to move away from this. The swiftest path to burnout is: staying in a business out of alignment to what you desire to do.
New customers are awesome and will be discussed next but returning customers are what builds a business. Knowing how many are sticking around and how many are leaving (by the way, this is natural), will help you determine how to best promote yourself. This can be tedious and daunting though so do it little by little. If you feel you can’t keep track of EVERY sale, most platforms allow you to download at least your sales data. You can then just search within the spreadsheet for certain names and look at their dates. Super simple way to tally up how many come back.
NEW CUSTOMERS! We saved the most common for last. Most models look at how many new customers they get and they aren’t wrong for doing so. Knowing WHERE your new customers come from and HOW MANY new customers you are getting is extremely important when it comes to planning collaborations, promo and content. Go one bigger though and also note if those customers go on to buy/tip/pay more than just the initial purchase within 30 days. This really means they dig your type of content and may well be on the way to being a Super Fan.
Again, there are way more things to keep track of; But, If the idea of analyzing your business from a mathematic perspective is intimidating then this is a great place to start. Once you feel comfortable and develop a system that works for you, feel free to add on more. Try playing with your numbers and creating different scenarios. What would happen if a certain vertical became illegal/no platforms allowed it anymore, how would you pivot? What if a new customer became a whale, how would you balance dealing with your other customers? Doing this will help you get more familiar with your numbers, understand how they intersect each other and get you ready to add on more!
